Knee and Wrist Wraps for Lifting: An Idiosyncratic Approach
After many requests, Sully offers a brief introduction to how HE wraps his wrists and knees. YMMV, and we're not going to argue about it. We focus on how to actually "train" your wrap, why we use Rogue wraps, how to avoid aggravating posterior patellar pain with a wrap, how to "focus" the wrap on problem areas, and why a wrist wrap is actually a wrist splint.

Some people just won’t ever do it, no matter how many times anyone tells them. These are people who have a different idea of what exercise is and what they will do, which is never stepping foot in a gym. Everyone else already knows the benefits because they train.

Hi Sully, you mentioned that you know when a client needs knee straps. What, generally, would the symptoms be? Is the same thing true for wrist wraps, or is that mainly to avoid poor form?

Enjoyed the video, great info and clear instruction. In the spirit of constructive criticism: Chapters would be very helpful. I always appreciate the whys, but when I come back to this video in a few months, I'll likely want to jump straight to the hows. Or, if I am sharing with a friend and want to get right to the whys, this would be far easier with chapters. And a question: How effective are sleeves for joint support? I have used a combination of sleeves and elastic bands to develop better mindfulness when squatting and I found them to be beneficial. However, I also realize that could have been a strong desire for them to work, so I maybe mentally exaggerated the good and ignored the bad...

I am in my 50's and the only barbell movement that has caused me consistent injury issues is the deadlift. Almost every barbell lifter I know (all over 40) complain that deadlifts cause them injury. It is only anecdotal but I am not buying that they are all doing the movement incorrectly.

@@MartinGreen932 You should walk a mile in my shoes. Almost everyone who does the deadlift without competent instruction does it incorrectly. We teach it correctly. And that's why we have 70, 80 and 90-year-olds who do the deadlift and never get hurt. Sorry I just think you're wrong on this. It's not the fault of the exercise, any more than people hurting themselves with power tools is the fault of the power tools.

Do some research into the Okinawan roots of karate and you'll find some ancient pictures of dudes practicing in khaki pants and wife beaters, with shoes on. There's nothing magical about a gi. I've been low bar squatting for a year and a half, along with the other SS lifts, and recently developed so much pain in my elbows that I can no longer effectively squat heavy (for me) weights. I'm doing shoulder and elbow rehab exercises and stretches, but I don't think it's in my best interest at 60yo to keep wrenching my shoulders and arms into the positions preferred for low bar squat. So....my new SSB should arrive today and I'm hopeful I can squat with it pain free and allow my elbows to heal.

Interesting debate. Of course, form and number of reps, how often you train, etc. crucial. Can deadlifts be safe if done carefully enough? Not sure, and I've never done them (low weight high reps careful squats, yes) but certainly I'd be very careful, especially if you aren't young. One other thing, there's a stunning mental component to back pain, and this has been shown in very high level controlled interventional studies, like one in 2021 by a Harvard's Michael Donino, which showed stunning effectiveness against back pain from mind body techniques. See the book, "The Way Out", by Alan Gordon to learn more.
